DAY 3 - CROWN’S AUSSIE MILLIONS ‘MAIN EVENT’ - TODAY – Thursday 28 January 2010 at 12:30pm
Melbourne, Australia. Thursday 28 January 2010. The Crown Poker Room was on high alert yesterday for another day of furious action with ‘Day-2’ of the coveted Aussie Millions ‘MAIN EVENT’. The field started with 294 runners spread throughout the film set in Studio 3 and the Crown Poker Room, ending with a little more than a third of those players still in the running for a first prize of AUD$2 million with ‘Day-3’ starting TODAY at 12.30pm.
Crown said adieu to several favourites. Joe Hachem, 2009 runner-up Peter Rho, Full Tilt Poker pros Erick Lindgren, John Juanda and cash game superstar Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan, Lee Nelson, James Akenhead and Karl Mahrenholz were all among the early departures. They were soon joined by WSOP last woman standing Leo Margets, Dan Harrington and Mark Vos.
In their place stands JP Kelly, Sorel Mizzi, Annette Obrestad, Barry Greenstein, 2007 Aussie Millions Champion Gus Hansen and Hendon Mob favourite Barny Boatman, among others. The Crown team were inspired by the play of David Frieling, who started the day with fewer than 98,000 chips and ended the day on top of the counts at 537,000.
Never count out the old-school professionals. A few dangerous tigers still in the mix, prowling the tables in search of chips include Team Full Tilt pro Howard Lederer, Australian Poker Hall of Fame inductee Marsha Waggoner and $100,000 Challenge Champion Dan Shak who is sitting in sixth place with 409,000 chips.
Not to forget Event 14 the ‘Teams Event’ and a big congratulations to Mel Judah and Mick Guttmann, as the winning pair.
The total number of players in Crown’s Aussie Millions ‘Main Event’ was 746, totalling a prize-pool of AUD$7.46 million and first prize of AUD$2 million. Runner up will walk away with a cool AUD$1.1 million for their efforts and the remaining 72 places will be paid, with 57th-72nd earning a minimum cash of AUD$15,000.
